The most common question I get before a session is simple: what to wear for a headshot. The short answer is a solid color, a good fit, and something you already feel confident in. The rest of this page explains why, and how to adjust for your job, your skin tone, and the backdrop.
What to Wear for a Headshot: The Short Version
Wear clothes that fit you today, not the size you plan to be. A jacket that pulls across the shoulders or a collar that gaps at the neck shows up in every frame.
Pick solid colors, keep the neckline simple, and iron or steam everything the night before. Bring two or three options so we can choose together under the lights.

What Colors Work Best on Camera?
Navy, charcoal, deep blue, teal, burgundy, and forest green photograph well on almost everyone. They add depth without pulling attention away from your face.
Avoid neon colors, which reflect onto your skin, and avoid colors that match your skin tone, which can make you look flat. Black and white both work, but they need the right setting, so I usually pair them with a mid-tone layer.
Tiny stripes and small checks can create a shimmering effect on camera called moire. Leave those at home or bring them as a backup.
What Should Men Wear for a Headshot?
A jacket over a collared shirt is the safest choice for business, with or without a tie. An open collar with a blazer reads relaxed and approachable, which suits sales, real estate, and consulting.
Check the collar fit at the neck, since that is where most shirts fail on camera. Get a haircut a few days before your session, not the morning of, and trim or shave the night before.
What Should Women Wear for a Headshot?
A blazer or a structured top gives the shoulders a clean line. V-necks and scoop necks flatter most faces, and a very low neckline pulls the eye away from your expression.
Keep jewelry small, since large earrings and layered necklaces compete with your face. Sleeves help in most business headshots, and a matte makeup finish handles studio lighting better than shimmer.

What Should I Wear for a Company Team Photo?
For teams, consistency matters more than any single outfit. I ask everyone to wear a solid color in a similar tone, so the finished set looks like one company.
If your team is booking an on-site day, send them these tips ahead of time. You can see how that works on my corporate headshots page.
What Should Doctors, Lawyers, and Realtors Wear?
Each profession has its own expectations. I cover the details in my guides to doctor headshots in Tampa and Tampa lawyer headshots.
How Does the Backdrop Change What to Wear for a Headshot?
The background changes the answer more than most people expect. Against a light gray or white backdrop, darker clothing gives you contrast and a crisp edge. Against a dark backdrop, mid-tones and lighter colors keep you from disappearing.
If you tell me where the image will be used, I can pick the backdrop and the outfit together. A LinkedIn photo on a white page behaves differently than a speaker bio on a dark conference site.
What Should You Avoid Wearing?
Skip large logos, graphic tees, and anything with writing on it. They pull the eye away from your face and can date the photo.
Heavy layers that bunch at the shoulders, wrinkled fabric, and stiff collars that stand away from the neck all show up in a close crop. Hats and sunglasses hide your expression, so leave them in the car.
If you wear glasses, tell me up front. I can angle the lights to cut glare, and I will take frames with and without them if you like.
What About Hair, Makeup, and Grooming?
Plan hair and grooming for a few days before the session, not the morning of. A fresh haircut needs a day or two to settle, and a new color is easier to judge after it has softened.
For makeup, aim for a slightly more polished version of your normal look. Studio lights are bright, and a matte finish keeps shine under control. You do not need a full glam team to look good in a headshot.
How Should You Prepare the Night Before?
Steam or iron everything, lay out your top choices, and pack backups on hangers. Eat something before you come, drink water, and sleep if you can. People who arrive relaxed give me better expressions in the first ten minutes.
That preparation matters as much as the outfit itself. Knowing what to wear for a headshot takes the biggest worry off the table, and the rest of the session gets easier.
Should I Wear White for a Headshot?
White works if it sits under a jacket or against a darker backdrop. A white shirt alone can look washed out next to a white background, so bring a second option in a mid-tone color.
Can I Wear Patterns in a Headshot?
Small stripes, checks, and tight herringbone can create a shimmering effect on camera. Solid colors and soft textures photograph cleanly. If you love a pattern, bring it as a backup and we will test it.
How Many Outfits Should I Bring to a Headshot Session?
Two or three. One safe choice, one with more color, and one you feel best in. I will pick the winner under the lights.
If you want the full picture of the process, my Tampa headshots page walks through a studio session, and the headshot overview on Wikipedia covers the history.
Ready to Book Your Session?
The easiest way to settle your outfit is to bring two or three options and let me look at them under the lights. I will tell you what works in the first minute, and you will not have to guess.
My studio is in the Kress Contemporary building in Ybor City, and I also bring a full portable studio to offices across Tampa Bay. Call or text me at (813) 625-8168, or send me a note here. I usually reply the same day.
