Headshot Photography Frequently Asked Questions – General
Headshot Photography Frequently Asked Questions often start with the basics: what a headshot is, why it matters, and how the process works. Below are clear, simple answers to help you feel prepared.
What is a professional headshot?
A professional headshot is a clean, close-up portrait used for business and personal branding. It shows your face clearly, with flattering lighting and a natural expression. You’ll use it on LinkedIn, company bios, websites, speaker pages, and marketing materials.
Why do headshots matter so much?
Your photo is often someone’s first impression of you online. A strong headshot builds trust and communicates confidence. Studies on first impressions suggest people make quick judgments based on images—so a polished photo helps you start on the right foot. For general reading on first impressions and perception, see Psychology Today and LinkedIn’s own guidance on profile photos in their help and editorial resources such as LinkedIn Profile Guidelines.
How often should I update my headshot?
Most professionals update every 1–2 years, or anytime you change your look (hair, beard, glasses) or role. If your headshot no longer looks like you, it’s time.
Do you serve Tampa and nearby areas?
Yes. I photograph individuals in my Lithia home studio and travel with a mobile studio across Tampa, Brandon, Riverview, Valrico, and beyond. See my Services for details.
Where do sessions take place?
You can come to my home studio, or I can set up on-site at your office with my mobile studio. Both options produce the same polished results.
How long does a headshot session take?
Individual sessions typically take 30–60 minutes. Corporate sessions can be as fast as 5–10 minutes per person with consistent lighting and background.
How do I choose my photos?
We review and narrow favorites together. You’ll get a proof gallery and select the final image(s) you want retouched.
Can AI replace a professional headshot?
Your photo is often someone’s first impression of you online. Research shows people form opinions in milliseconds—facial expression, grooming, and posture carry real weight (first impression research). A strong, professional headshot builds instant trust, and the halo effect means a polished image can positively influence how people perceive your competence and warmth. Pricing, Usage Rights & Copyright
How does pricing work?
My pricing is simple and all-inclusive—no extra fees, taxes, or surprises. You pay for the session and the final retouched images you choose. Here’s the breakdown:
In-Studio Express: $325 flat — includes one look and one retouched image (same-day delivery).
Studio Headshots: $325 for the first image, $100 for each additional image you select.
On-Site Headshots: $500 setup fee (includes one person) + $125 per additional person.
Event Headshot Booth: $1,000 Express (up to 1 hour, ~10 people), $1,750 Half-Day (up to 3 hours, ~40–50 people), or $2,750 Full-Day (up to 6 hours, ~80–100 people).
All prices are final—taxes and card fees are included. Every selected image comes with professional retouching and polished delivery, so you walk away with headshots you’re proud to use.
What’s included in the price?
Coaching, professional lighting, background, capture, and carefully retouched final images. You only purchase the images you select.
How are corporate or team headshots priced?
For on-site teams, I charge a setup fee and a per-person rate. This covers consistent lighting, efficient flow, and delivery of selected retouched images. If you need employee-by-employee file naming, I include that too. Visit Corporate Headshot Booth for more details.
Who owns the copyright to my headshot?
Like most professional photography, the photographer retains copyright. You receive a license to use the image for business and personal branding (LinkedIn, website, proposals, speaking events). If you need special usage (large ads, billboards), let me know and I’ll tailor a license.
What is a “license,” and do I need one?
A license is permission to use the photo in certain ways. My standard license covers typical professional uses. If your company requires specific terms, I’m happy to provide a custom license.
Do you offer refunds?
I stand behind my work. If you’re not happy during the session, I’ll coach you until we get the right look. Because photography is a creative service and time is reserved, session fees are typically non-refundable; however, rescheduling is easy with notice. If you have concerns, please ask before booking.
Preparation, Wardrobe & Grooming
What should I wear for a headshot?
Choose simple, well-fitted clothes in solid colors. Avoid heavy patterns or large logos. Bring 2–3 top options. If in doubt, bring more; I’ll help you choose what photographs best. For more tips, read my Headshot Prep Guide.
Which colors look best on camera?
Neutrals (black, white, gray, navy) and rich jewel tones (teal, burgundy, deep green) work well. Think contrast with your background and your skin tone.
What about jewelry and accessories?
Keep it minimal and professional. Small, classic pieces won’t distract from your eyes and expression.
Should I do hair and makeup?
Light, natural makeup is ideal; it evens skin without looking heavy. Men should consider a light powder to reduce shine. Bring a hairbrush, lip balm, and any styling products.
Can I wear my glasses?
Yes. I adjust lighting to reduce glare and reflections. If you have photochromic lenses that darken outdoors, bring a clear-lens pair if possible.
Any tips for facial hair?
Groom beards cleanly. Shave or trim on the session day (or the night before if your skin gets irritated). Bring a razor if you might switch looks.
How do I handle blemishes or skin texture?
Don’t worry—subtle retouching cleans up temporary blemishes and shine while keeping skin natural. Hydrate and sleep well the night before.
How do I practice expressions?
Stand in front of a mirror and practice a gentle smile, slight squint (to engage the eyes), and a relaxed jaw. During your session, I’ll coach you through angles and micro-expressions. You can read a blog post I wrote about practicing smiling here.
How should I prep the day before?
Hydrate, get good sleep, avoid excessive salt or alcohol, and set outfits out in advance. Bring lip balm and lint roller. Arrive a few minutes early to settle in.
Which background should I choose?
Classic options are white, gray, or black. A custom composite (clean office or brand-matched background) can also look great and on-brand. I’ll help you pick what fits your goals.
During the Session
I’m not a model—will you help me pose?
Absolutely. I coach every step—posture, chin, eyes, and expression. My goal is to help you look confident and approachable without feeling stiff.
What camera angle is best?
For most people, a slightly lower-than-eye-level angle strengthens the jawline and feels confident and engaging. I’ll test angles to find your best look.
How many looks or outfits can I do?
Most individual sessions include one main look with time for a quick variation (jacket on/off, hair adjusted). If you need multiple outfits or backgrounds, we can plan a longer session.
Can I see photos during the session?
Yes. We review as we go so you know what’s working. I have a 55″ flatscreen display that is tethered to my camera. You will get to see every image we take in high-definition detail. This helps us lock in the winning expression early.
I’m nervous in front of the camera—what helps?
That’s normal. I’ll guide you through easy steps: breathe, relax your shoulders, light squint, gentle smile. We take breaks and adjust pacing so you feel comfortable.
What about hygiene and cleanliness?
My studio and mobile setup are tidy and sanitized. Clean, lint-rolled backdrops and regularly cleaned gear keep everything professional.
Can I bring props?
Keep it simple. If a small prop supports your brand (e.g., a stethoscope for a doctor, or a book for an author), we can include it sparingly.
After the Session, Editing & Delivery
What does “retouching” include?
Retouching removes temporary blemishes, reduces shine, evens skin tone, whitens teeth slightly, and tames flyaways while keeping authentic skin texture. Heavy smoothing is avoided—you should look like you, on your best day.
How fast do I get my final images?
Turnaround is usually fast. Many individuals receive finals within a few business days after selections. Teams can receive their galleries as selections are finalized, with retouched files delivered promptly.
What file sizes do I get?
You’ll receive high-resolution files for print and optimized web files for LinkedIn and websites. If your company needs a specific crop or size, I’ll export to spec.
How are images delivered?
Secure online gallery download with simple instructions. If you need a branded folder structure or naming convention, I’ll handle that too.
Can I request edits after delivery?
Yes. If you need a minor tweak, just ask. Additional or advanced retouching can be quoted if needed.
Do you keep backups?
Yes, I keep backups for a period of time. Still, please download and save your files in at least two places.
Corporate & Team Headshots
How does an on-site team session work?
I bring a compact mobile studio: lights, stands, background, and a tethered laptop for quick review. We plan a schedule so each person has clear instructions and the process runs smoothly.
How long per person?
Usually 5–10 minutes each for consistent, high-quality results. Leaders or speakers may need a few extra minutes for multiple looks.
How do you ensure consistent results across a team?
I lock in lighting and camera settings, mark floor positions, and keep the same background and lens. This ensures a unified brand look across employees.
Can you add new hires later to match the set?
Yes. I maintain lighting notes and background references so we can match the look for future employees.
Can you deliver files named by employee?
Yes. I can name files by FirstName_LastName or your preferred convention for easy HR and web updates.
Can we add our branded background?
Yes. We can photograph on a neutral background and composite your brand-friendly office or color later to match your style guide.
Events & Headshot Booth
What is a headshot booth?
It’s a streamlined setup for conferences, expos, or company events where attendees step in, get coached, and receive a professional headshot. Great for engagement and value.
How many people can you photograph per hour?
Depending on flow and add-ons, 25–40 per hour is common. We can scale with additional staff if needed.
Can attendees receive images the same day?
Yes. We can offer same-day selection and delivery of a polished image, or batch delivery following quick retouching.
Can the booth be branded for our event?
Yes. We can include a branded background, overlay graphics, and customized file naming.
How do we book the booth for our event?
Share your date, venue, estimated headcount, and desired turnaround. I’ll propose a package that fits. Start here: Corporate Headshot Booth.
Special Situations & Other Topics
Do students or recent grads need headshots?
Yes—especially if you’re entering fields like business, law, healthcare, or marketing. A strong headshot helps on LinkedIn, resumes, and applications.
Any tips for medical, legal, or financial professionals?
Keep it classic and trustworthy: neutral backgrounds, clean grooming, simple attire. If you have a brand color, we can use a subtle accent.
What about authors, speakers, and coaches?
We’ll shoot a core business headshot and then a few variations for book jackets, speaker pages, and banners.
I’m worried about wrinkles or age—can a headshot still look great?
Absolutely. Lighting, angles, and gentle retouching make a huge difference. Confidence beats perfection. The goal is a real, polished you.
Do you recommend whitening teeth or haircuts before the session?
If you’re planning either, do it about a week before so it looks natural and you’ve had time to get used to the change. Avoid last-minute drastic changes.
Do you work with real estate teams?
Yes. I photograph many realtors and brokerages and can deliver a unified look across your website, yard signs, and marketing materials.
Do you photograph veterans?
Yes. I offer a special veteran headshot session each month at my studio. Ask about availability and details.
What if I need accessibility accommodations?
Let me know your needs in advance. I will arrange lighting positions, posing options, and timing to make the experience comfortable.
Can you add a realistic office background later?
Yes. Composite backgrounds are a popular way to achieve a brand-consistent look without leaving the studio. We’ll match perspective and lighting so it looks natural.
