What casting wants

What Casting Directors Want From Actor Headshots in Tampa

Casting directors and agents look through many headshots quickly. They want a clear, honest photo of your face, with eyes that connect and an expression that has something going on behind it. Heavy styling and heavy retouching work against you.

I keep the lighting clean and bright, the backdrop simple, and the retouching light, so you look like the person who shows up.

Looks

Commercial and Theatrical Looks

Most actors leave with two looks. A commercial look is warm, open, and friendly. A theatrical look is more serious and layered. Bring a few solid tops in different colors and we will build both.

I coach your expression so it reads as a thought, not a pose. You see every frame on the big screen, so you know what you are getting.

Wardrobe

What to Wear for Actor Headshots

Choose solid colors that suit your skin tone, simple necklines, and nothing with logos or tight patterns. Mid-tone blues, greens, and warm colors usually work well next to your face. Keep jewelry minimal and bring layers so a quick change gives you a new look.

For more, see my guide on what to wear for a headshot.

Where it is used

Where Actors Use Their Headshots

Agent submissions, casting profiles on sites like Actors Access, Backstage, and Casting Networks, your resume, and your website all use the same image. Many of these sites prefer a vertical crop.

Tell me which platforms you use and I will deliver the crop each one needs.

Timing

How Often Should an Actor Update Their Headshots?

Update them when your look changes, or about every one to two years. A new haircut, a new hair color, or a major change in weight means it is time. Casting directors want a photo that matches the person in the room.

Actor Headshots in Tampa: Common Questions

About 50 minutes, one on one, in my Ybor City studio. That is enough time for a commercial look and a theatrical look, with time to review images.

Usually two or three. Bring a few solid tops and layers, and we will build a commercial look and a theatrical look in the same session.

Light, natural makeup that you would wear to an audition works well. Avoid heavy styling, since casting directors want to see the real you.

I send retouched files sized for casting sites, agent submissions, and your resume. Tell me which platforms you use and I will match their crops.

The same day. You pick your favorites right after the session and I send the retouched files that day.
