What ERAS asks for

What Is an ERAS Photo, and Do You Need One?

ERAS is the Electronic Residency Application Service run by the AAMC. Through MyERAS you can upload a photo that programs see with your application, and the AAMC says its purpose is to help programs identify you when you report for an interview. US medical graduates upload their own photo under Additional Documents in MyERAS. International medical graduates have their photo handled through ECFMG, and fellowship applicants through the EFDO. Programs vary in how they use it, so check what each of yours expects.

The technical rules are short. The file must be a JPG, JPEG or PNG, no larger than 150 KB, with your face centered. Attire and background are not spelled out, so I keep it simple: a clean background, even light, professional dress and a face that fills the frame. You also choose which programs receive the photo, and once it is assigned to a program you have applied to, it cannot be unassigned. Get it right before you submit.

What to wear

What to Wear for an ERAS Headshot

A white coat is the fastest way to say physician, and it works well if you are comfortable in it. Bring it pressed, and decide whether you want your name and program patch showing. Plenty of applicants choose a suit or blazer instead, in a solid color with nothing busy near the face. Either choice is fine. What matters is that you look like yourself on a good day.

Bring two or three solid tops, a pressed white coat if you want one, and the glasses you wear every day. Skip large jewelry, logos and loud patterns. If you are not sure, bring everything and I will help you sort it out on the screen, since you see each frame as I shoot.

Training schedules do not leave much room for a photo shoot. My studio is in the Kress Contemporary building in Ybor City, close to downtown Tampa and I-4, and one session takes about 50 minutes, one on one, so you can fit it around rotations. Applicants who are traveling in to interview in Tampa are welcome too.

If your class, department or program wants photos for a group, I can bring a compact studio to you and photograph each person in 5 to 7 minutes. See on-site team headshots for how that works.

How it works

How an ERAS Headshot Session Works

Tell me your submission window and I will find a time that fits your schedule. At the studio I light and shoot while you watch each frame on a big screen, so you know exactly what you are getting. You choose your favorite, I retouch it, and the file lands in your inbox the same day.

You receive a version sized for MyERAS (JPG, under 150 KB, face centered) and a full-size version for LinkedIn, your hospital profile and your CV site.

Timing

When to Get Your ERAS Photo Taken

In recent seasons MyERAS has opened in early June, with applicants able to submit to programs in early September. Most people get their photo taken over the summer and upload it before they submit. The AAMC publishes the exact dates each season, so check the current ERAS timeline for yours.

Reach out as soon as you know your window, especially if you are away on rotations. A photo you are happy with is one less thing to chase in September.

What a Recent Applicant Said

“James was super accommodating of my busy schedule and was really easy to work with. The session was efficient but very high quality. I have already recommended him to many of my colleagues!”

ERAS headshot FAQs

ERAS Headshot Questions, Answered

It is the photo you upload in MyERAS so residency programs can identify you, especially when you report for an interview. US medical graduates upload their own. International medical graduates go through ECFMG, and fellowship applicants through the EFDO.

The AAMC accepts JPG, JPEG or PNG files up to 150 KB, with your face centered in the frame. I deliver a version sized for that limit, plus a full-size version for everything else.

The AAMC says the photo helps programs identify you, and that programs vary in how they use it. Check the requirements for each program you apply to, and ask your dean’s office if you are unsure.

It is your choice, and both a white coat and professional business attire work. A white coat signals physician at a glance. A solid suit or blazer reads polished and timeless. Bring both if you cannot decide and I will show you each one on screen.

A studio session is about 50 minutes, one on one, with a live preview so you approve every frame. For a group, I can come to you and photograph each person in 5 to 7 minutes.

Your retouched file arrives the same day as your session.

The AAMC says once the photo is assigned to a program you have applied to, it cannot be unassigned. That makes it worth getting the right photo before you submit.

My studio is in the Kress Contemporary building at 1624 E. 7th Ave., Suite 237, in Ybor City, Tampa. I also travel with a portable studio for groups and programs.
